ChromeOS Flex
Purpose
Repurpose supported Intel/AMD PCs and Macs as secure, web-first ChromeOS-style endpoints with automatic OS updates and optional centralized management.
Decision Summary
Assessment candidate for certified, supported x86-64 models after hardware and application validation. Do not approve non-certified/decertified models or workloads requiring unsupported apps/features.
Use Cases
Web-first endpoints; kiosks; shared/frontline devices; education and business fleets; digital signage; temporary live-USB hardware evaluation.
Field Notes
Check exact certified model and support end date. Full install wipes disk; dual boot unsupported. Test all peripherals in live mode and keep a verified original-OS image.
Hardware Requirements
Intel/AMD x86-64, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, USB boot, BIOS/UEFI admin access, and 8 GB installer USB. Exact model certification required; ARM unsupported.
Backup Strategy
Before installation, create and verify a full-disk image including EFI/recovery partitions; export local data, application data, keys, and licences; retain original recovery media.
Recovery Strategy
Restore the verified original disk image or reinstall the prior OS from recovery media, then restore user data. ChromeOS Flex rollback is not supported.
Secure Boot Notes
Google recommends UEFI Secure Boot where supported. Flex images are signed, but Flex lacks Chromebook verified boot/Google security chip. Disable only for documented model-specific necessity.
Version History
Successor to Neverware CloudReady. Follows ChromeOS release channels. Added and officially reviewed 2026-08-04.
